How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
