FAQ

Are there any requirements to be a handyman?

To become an independent contractor in most states, you don't need to have a license (as opposed with a salaried worker). However, you will still need to meet certain conditions:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • You should have a high school diploma, or a GED.
  • You will need to complete a four week course at a vocational college.
  • Pass a background check through the state's Department of Licensing.
  • To register for an annual subscription, pay $20

You will also require a business license as well as workers' compensation insurance.

How long does a handyman take?

It takes many years of hard work to become an expert handyman. It often starts by helping family members and friends, and then grows into a full-time job.

You'll start to learn all the skills needed as you go along.

Is it better to pay a handyman on an hourly basis or per-project basis?

Personal preference is the most important factor. To know the exact cost of a handyman's services, some prefer to pay by the hour. Others prefer to be paid for each job completed, since they may need multiple jobs at the same time. Either way is fine.

What qualifications do I need to be a handyman?

The most important qualification you'll need as a handyman is a patience. Also, experience with working with electrical systems, carpentry skills and plumbing knowledge is essential.

Many jobs are available to qualified workers. However, if they don't exist, you may not be eligible.

It might be worth looking into schools that specialize in these courses.

How to Replace a Broken Window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. This repair will take only 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
