How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
