How do I replace a damaged window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
