How do I replace a damaged window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
