How to replace a broken window

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
