How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
