How To

How to replace a broken window

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
