How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. This repair will take only 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
