How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
