FAQ

Do I need to pay a handyman per hour or per project?

It all comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer paying by the hour to know exactly how much their handyman charges. Others prefer to pay for each completed project since they may have multiple jobs simultaneously. Either way works fine.

Are there any requirements to be a handyman?

A license is not required to become an independent contractor in most States. However, certain requirements must be met:

  • You must be at least 18 years.
  • Do you have a high-school diploma or GED?
  • A four-week course in a vocational school.
  • A background check is required by the Department of Licensing.
  • Pay a $20 fee to register annually.

You will also require business licenses as well workers' compensation coverage.

What's the time taken by a handyman for a project to be completed?

It all depends upon the size of your project. The time it takes to finish smaller projects is more common than larger ones. A handyman can usually finish a project in one week, regardless of its size.

How To

How to replace a broken window

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
