How To

How to Replace a Broken Window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
